The Health Director-General – Who Is He and Why He’s Awesome

Our Health Director-General (DG), Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has been all over Malaysian media these past few weeks, as he has been working with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to handle the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a recent news, he politely disagreed with MOH that the coronavirus can be “flushed into the stomach with warm water”.

Dr Noor Hisham has been the Director General of Health of Malaysia since 2013. In his position, he has worked with three different Ministers of Health, including the current minister Datuk Seri Adham Baba, and the previous ministers Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (2018-2020) and Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam Sathasivam (2013-2018).

The post of Health Director-General is a Ministry Executive under the Deputy of Minister within the Malaysian Ministry of Health. The Health DG is in charge of all the state Health Departments, including the Deputy Director-General posts.

According to The Rakyat Post, Dr Noor Hisham is a trained surgeon with a Master’s degree in Surgery and a Doctorate of Medicine from UKM. He went on to specialize in endocrine surgery and has practiced in Australian universities. Dr Noor Hisham has also published several articles on endocrine surgery in medical journals.

He is also the chair of the Global Surgery Subcommittee of the International Society of Surgery (ISS) for the current term of 5 years (2017-2021).
