The Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG) teamed up with the Johor office of the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) to promote sustainability among businesses in the area.
March 2023 – Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG) organised a roundtable discussion in collaboration with UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) to bring industry leaders together to share best practices, discuss challenges and opportunities, and develop collective strategies for promoting sustainable practices in the constituency. The roundtable aligns with MBPG’s goal of becoming a low-carbon and smart city by 2025.
The participating companies gained insights into reporting standards, greenhouse gas (GHG) and carbon footprint calculation tools, freely available tools and resources for companies, best practices, and common challenges faced by other companies. They also learned how adopting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) can help them become more responsible and competitive in the long term.
“This program is one of the methods for MBPG to communicate to the business community, the importance of making Pasir Gudang a port and industrial city that is sustainable and livable. The development of Pasir Gudang does not only prioritize the economic aspect, but also concerned with a healthy social environment that reflects a dynamic administration. This is synonymous with our ‘Dynamic Pasir Gudang, industrial city and port’ slogan” said the Mayor of Pasir Gudang Dato’ Asman Shah Bin Abd Rahman
The primary objective of the roundtable is to enable a constructive and enlightening conversation that encourages participants to exchange knowledge and cooperate with MBPG in tackling sustainability challenges and exploring opportunities.
“The session is an excellent opportunity for companies operating in the constituency to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability while also networking with other industry leaders and developing collective strategies for promoting sustainable practices in their business,” said Edey Suresh, Johor State Director of UNGCMYB.
Attendees included CEOs and senior representatives from Luvata Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Pantech Group Holdings Berhad, Evergreen Heavy Industrial Corp (M) Berhad, Mewaholeo Industries Sdn Bhd, Eco Tropics Development Sdn Bhd, Malaysia Marine & Heavy Engineering, 5E Resources Sdn Bhd, Lotte Chemical Titan (M) Sdn Bhd, All Cosmos Industries, Vance Bioenergy Sdn Bhd and Kek Seng (M) Bhd.
In light of climate change-related incidents and other ESG-related business risks faced by Johor, UNGCMYB has planned a series of roundtable sessions to highlight the importance of sustainable business practices.
