September 15, 2021 – Grab Malaysia and the Ministry of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) officially launched the Minggu Peniaga Kecil campaign today to help small, local F&B businesses to thrive online.
The Minggu Peniaga Kecil campaign is part of GrabFood Small Business Programme. This is one of Grab’s key efforts to help small local F&B businesses to adapt to the new normal with the growing demand for online services.
Speaking about the programme, Minister Dato Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi of the Ministry of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs shared that such efforts were in line with the ministry’s goal to help businesses overcome the challenges of the current climate.
“One of the key visions of the Ministry is to ensure a progressive sustainable trade that empowers businesses and benefits consumers. With over 98.5% of businesses in Malaysia comprising small and medium enterprises (SMEs), we are encouraged to see platforms like Grab supporting small businesses through technology and various efforts implemented such as the Minggu Peniaga Kecil promotions. The success from Grab’s Minggu Peniaga Kecil pilot has been encouraging as it is an additional means to elevate businesses,” shared Dato Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).
“When we started GrabFood, we wanted to create a transparent structure that charges based on successful sales, not just clicks or views. We hope that this shared-success model would create a conducive platform for all businesses – big or small – to thrive and to grow online. With Minggu Peniaga Kecil, we are taking this a step further, by driving additional awareness for the smaller F&B brands. Today, we are honored to have the Minister’s support to further elevate the Minggu Peniaga Kecil effort. We also look forward to more opportunities to collaborate with the Ministry, and for our community to continue uplifting and supporting more small businesses nationwide,” said Sean Goh, Managing Director, Grab Malaysia.
Based on the 2021 Food Delivery Industry Overview report, Malaysia recorded the third highest number of new users to online food delivery services in Southeast Asia. One of their main motivations for trying the service was to enjoy exclusive promotions only available for online delivery. Leveraging on this insight, Grab had earlier piloted the Minggu Peniaga Kecil programme to help drive visibility and discoverability for the small businesses on our platform, using promotions.
From May to August 2021, the number of small businesses that have joined the programme grew by 5x and saw their revenue increase by more than 30% on average. In conjunction with Merdeka and Malaysia Day, 10,000 eligible small businesses also received a special Peniaga Kecil Relief rebate for every promo order they received. The promotions have also attracted almost 70% new consumers to try offerings from these small businesses. Coupled with the revenue increase, this also translates into more earning opportunities for Grab’s delivery-partners.
The Minggu Peniaga Kecil promotion in September is expected to benefit almost 39,000 small businesses. From 24 – 30 September, Grab users can enjoy 30% off for orders above RM20 when they use the promo code PENIAGAKECIL.
